Max and Michal returned to the squad about an hour later. Their expressions revealed the difficult experience they had just undergone.

“I’m not doing this anymore,” Michal said, bursting into tears. “It’s inhuman.”

“I agree with you that it’s a nightmare telling parents that their son was murdered. A boy who might not even have experienced first love yet, a boy who wanted to enlist in the army, to go on a long trip abroad. All those dreams shattered because of one crazy woman,” Max said, massaging his aching leg.

“It’s both that,” Michal said, “and having to lie to the parents.”

“Not telling the whole truth isn’t lying,” Max shouted. His nerves were frayed as well.

“In American movies, they say to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth!” Michal said through her tears.

“It’s difficult enough for parents to accept the fact that their son was murdered. There’s no need to entirely ruin their life, or to describe what was taken from the body. As far as I’m concerned, that’s the truth that needs to be told.”

“Who are you to determine for the parents whether they get to know the whole truth or just part of it?” Michal asked, her voice quieter.

“Maybe you also want to give them a photo of their son’s dickless body?” Max replied in fury.

Michal’s weeping intensified, and Max, too, seemed close to tears. The parents’ expressions had indicated that they already understood the reason for the police’s arrival. In any case, by law, Max had to officially convey the news to them. When asked by the father how his son had been murdered, Max replied that he had been stabbed in the neck.

Eventually, Max realized that Michal’s anger was her way of dealing with the difficult events she had experienced. He rose to make coffee for Michal and himself, resting his hand on her shoulder and trying to soothe her.

“I’m never doing that again,” Michal said.

“You know, I said the same thing after my first time. But then I understood that someone has to do it, after all. So, it might as well be me, and I’ll do it with as much sensitivity and humanity as I can. It’s true that it’s terrible, but I take comfort in the fact that we did it properly.”

“Yeah, that’s really comforting me,” Michal muttered.

Max did not react. He understood she had experienced trauma, and decided to let her be. Much to his relief, Avi arrived at that moment, and Max signaled him to go see Michal. Avi was quite eager to take on the role of consoler.

Yoni returned with the previously deleted information from the two files. The local file was in the archives, while the file from the Haifa area necessitated e-mailing the court order; the file details would also arrive via e-mail.

Max, Din and Yoni examined the information in the local file. The rape victim’s name was Aliza Cohen. Her address, ID number and parents’ names were all included. Din asked Tammy to show him how to use the Population Registry database, which was accessible to the police.
